Villager debuted as the Super Smash Bros. series’ very first playable Animal Crossing representative when Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U released back in 2014. The character returns in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate for Nintendo Switch, but with a very different unlock method than before, so if you’re itching to play as Villager, look no further than this guide!
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate boasts its “streamlined” way of unlocking characters, which is probably appropriate given players only start with eight. That means a whopping 69 characters must be unlocked before a player can enjoy the game’s full roster. That being said, like for all other characters, there’re three different ways to unlock Villager.
Through the first and second unlock methods, when players fight Villager, it’ll be on the Smashville stage with “Title (Animal Crossing)” music playing. Once Villager’s successfully defeated, Villager’ll be added to the roster. If a player loses, Villager’ll be waiting for a rematch in the “Challenger’s Approach” menu under “Games & More.” Note that you may have to play a few other modes before Villager will appear for a rematch.
1. Classic Mode unlock method
This is the fastest way to unlock Villager in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. You know why? ‘Cause all you have to do is play Classic Mode once! In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, there’s a set “path” to unlocking characters through Classic Mode — playing a specific character will always unlock another specific character.
To unlock Villager, simply complete Pikachu’s Classic Mode route. Pikachu’s Classic Mode, “I Choose You!”, has players going up against Pokémon characters from across the series, ending with a fight against Mewtwo followed by Master Hand. After finishing with Pikachu, Villager will challenge the player.
2. Timed encounter unlock method
The seemingly fastest way to unlock all fighters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is simply by fighting. Whenever a player finishes a VS. match, a Mob Smash, a Spirit Board fight or exits the World of Light mode, a new character will challenge the player. After this, a player must then wait 10 minutes before being able to unlock another character.
Villager is the sixth character to be unlocked through this method. Before unlocking Villager through this method, players will encounter Ness, Zelda, Bowser, Pit and Inkling.
3. World of Light unlock method
Lastly, players can unlock Villager by playing the “World of Light” Adventure Mode and having Villager join their party. Depending on your level of skill, this may take you a longer or shorter amount of time than the Classic Mode unlock method. Villager’s able to be added to the player’s World of Light party fairly early on; after players add Mario, he is one of three fighters a player can challenge on a three-pronged path (the others are Sheik and Marth — Villager’s on the right). Simply fight and defeat Villager to add the character to both your World of Light party and your overall game roster. If you lose, no worries: Simply rematch until you win.
