It happens to the best of us: Sometimes, we just get tired of our Animal Crossing: New Leaf town and want to reset it. Or, perhaps we just need a new start — need to turn over a new leaf — and want to begin anew. No matter your reasoning, resetting your Animal Crossing: New Leaf town is a fairly simple process. However, it depends on what you want out of your reset. Do you want to completely erase your save file (to resell your game, for example), or do you want to erase your town and start a new game?

Completely erasing your save file

If you want to completely erase your Animal Crossing: New Leaf save file, simply follow these steps:

  1. Launch Animal Crossing: New Leaf from the Nintendo 3DS home menu.
  2. Right after the Nintendo 3DS logo loading screen, press and hold the “A,” “B,” “X” and “Y” buttons.
  3. Select “Yes” when prompted to delete your save file.

Resetting your town

If you want to reset your Animal Crossing: New Leaf town to start a new one, follow these steps:

  1. Launch Animal Crossing: New Leaf from the Nintendo 3DS home menu.
  2. From the title screen, press the “A” button.
  3. Select “Continue” and choose the name of your character.
  4. Isabelle will load your town and remind you of the date and time. Select “I need help first.”
  5. Select “Re-create the town” followed by “This is what I want.”

Did Isabelle ask if you want to become mayor of a new town?

Note: This part is only for players who have updated to Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo.

Yes!

Great! That means your town’s “Prestige Level” is high enough for Tom Nook to buy it off you for Bells. These Bells will appear in your ABD (bank account) when your new town is set up.

  1. Select “I want a new town.”
  2. When Tom Nook appears, select “Appraise it!”
  3. Tom Nook will ask if you want to sell the town catalog, as well. Select “Sell catalog” or “Don’t sell catalog.” If you sell your catalog, you’ll receive more Bells from Tom Nook, but you’ll no longer have access to the items in your new game. If you don’t sell your catalog, you’ll receive less Bells from Tom Nook, but you’ll have access to all of your catalog items at the beginning of your new game.
  4. Select whether to receive the amount in a “Lump sum” (all at once) or “Installments” (100 daily payments, with interest).
  5. Follow the remaining onscreen instructions to finish up and delete your current town. Please note, though, that once your Animal Crossing: New Leaf town is deleted, it cannot be recovered!

No.

Ah, well; unfortunately, your town’s “Prestige Level” isn’t high enough for Tom Nook to buy it off you for Bells. If you’re still interesting in continuing, keep reading.

  1. Select “Delete It!” to delete your Animal Crossing: New Leaf town. Please note, though, that once your Animal Crossing: New Leaf town is deleted, it cannot be recovered!

How do I know if Tom Nook will buy my town or not beforehand?

Nintendo of America tweeted out a handy guide for players to refer to, which will help determine of Tom Nook will appear to buy your town or not. Your town’s “Prestige Level” is tied to the size of the town tree in your town plaza.

To reach a level three “Prestige Level,” you need to have played at least 20 days and 20 hours of Animal Crossing: New Leaf. After playing 20 days and 20 hours of the game, you’ll be able to sell your town to Tom Nook in exchange for Bells.
