Next year’s Animal Crossing: New Horizons for Nintendo Switch will include tons of character customization options, including the ability to change details at any time, skin tone customization and gender-neutral hairstyles.
“Right from the start, you’ll be able to choose the way you want to look,” Aya Kyogoku, New Horizons director said in an interview with Polygon during E3 2019. “All the facial parts or hairstyles are all gender-free. So you can select from a pool of hairstyles and facial features and then they’re also changeable at any point in the game. So if you feel like a certain way one day, then you can make that change pretty easily.”
Additionally, players will be able to change their eye color and skin tone.
Both Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer and Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp included character customization beyond past titles, but start-of-game (and anytime) free customization is a first for a mainline installment.
The addition of skin tone customization is also of note, as past methods of changing skin color were through “tanning” — either on-island or during the summer.
